Day 1 – North Island – 6th March 2010

Nice relaxed start to the day. We were not going to do much today so that we could relax from all the travelling we have been doing. Well. That was the plan. Somehow it didn’t work out as planned.

Had a lovely breakfast and went out for a short walk. Went down to the beach and the shore walk and on to the Omana Reserve. This is a protected area and makes for an excellent walk along the shoreline. We reached some fabulous house and Celia and Hugh seem to know everyone so we had a couple of chats on the way and having decided we would have oysters for lunch we were concerned that the oyster shop may close early so decided to make back home. We then came across another friend and asked about the closing time but he did not know so we went in to phone up.

Well, nothing is ever that simple so we stayed for a coffee and another natter. We found the oyster shop was open until 4:00pm so no rush there. We then left to pick up some oysters.

Now, you may not know this, but there is only one place to get the best oysters, and that is round the coast from Maraetai, following the Pacific Highway and the Clevedon-Kawakawa Bay Road to Clevedon Coast Oysters. These oysters are farmed on the doorstep and prepared and packed on the spot. You can’t get much fresher than that. We returned home and set about them with great gusto and a lovely white!! Splendid!

Just as we were finishing the oysters, our new best friend turned up to invite us out for a short cruise on his yacht. Brilliantus! So we did just that and Hugh drove us down to the marina where we boarded the 40ft yacht, Florence. Had a great time and tootled around in the best of spirits – not least due to the excellent champagne that Hugh supplied. How cool was that?

Now back home and relaxing and I’m taking the time out to write this while Celia and Hugh prepare our rack of lamb for the Barbie.

  1. You crazy kids! Having the time of your lives. Have I said that already in a previous comment? Yes I probably have but isn't it true? You lucky lucky people. Florence looks like a lovely yacht. I bet you had an amazing time. It's so good to keep getting these updates on your adventures as they happen. All is well in Blighty with the Cambridge Jenkinson possé. Keep on having fun!
